Who sang Blue first? Patsy Cline or Leann Rhimes?

patsy cline
Stecki asked:

Ok… I heard that Blue was written for Patsy Cline, but she died before she could record it. So the song writer saved the song and waited for a singer to sing it. He found Leann Rhimes and she was the first to actually record it and put it on an album. Is this true?? Do you have proof?
Blue and Blue moon of Kentucky are two different songs…

Did you just yank a question similar to this? I was about to respond stating the same thing. I didn’t think Patsy ever had the chance to record it. I’ll do some research and edit this answer if I find anything.

    EDIT: I found it!!!

What’s the story behind the song “Blue?”

Texas DJ Bill Mack wrote the song in the early 60s with Patsy in mind, and he was *just* about to present it to her when she was killed. Per Jonsson sends this info from The All Music Guide:

“After Mack arranged a record contract for (LeAnn) Rimes with Curb Records, the label sent out a release with the single of ‘Blue’ that claimed the DJ had been waiting over 30 years to find the right vocalist to sing ‘Blue.’ The story was an exaggeration: ‘Blue’ had been recorded by no less than three different artists, including Bill Mack and Kenny Roberts, who both released versions on Starday in the ’60s, and in 1993, Kathryn Pitt released the record as a single in her native Australia. Nevertheless, the story was repeated throughout the country and mainstream music press, adding to the growing myth that Rimes was the successor to Cline’s tradition. ‘Blue’ and its accompanying album of the same name became a major hit in the summer of 1996.”

But what I wouldn’t give to have heard Patsy’s version!

Patsy Cline sang it first, it is on the Blue Moon Kentucky LP about 20 years before Leann Rhimes was born

Leann Rhimes wasn’t even a twinkle in her fathers eyes yet when The Late Great Patsy Cline recorded this song. I have the album on vinyl LP! Blue Moon of Kentucky. Leanne did do an excellent job….but Patsy definitely recorded it first.

blue was written for patsy cline but she died before recording it. the writer saw leann rimes (who was 14) at a state fair talent show with a voice that was just like patsy’s and he offered to let her record it and it became her first single.

Patsy Cline NEVER EVER sang BLUE she only ever sang Blue Moon Of Kentucky which is a comepletly different song
the song was written for her but she never got to sing it
the writer left it lying around until he heard the 14 year old Leanne Rhimes and said she was the one that sounded most like Patsy and gave it to her to record the rest is history

Blue is a slow ballad where Blue Moon Of Kentucky has an upbeat tempo

Yes, Leann Rhimes was the first to record it and I do not have any proof.
